Governor Christie stood in the winner’s circle at Monmouth Park racetrack on Sunday, before a record crowd of 60,000, hugging the owner of a Triple Crown-winning horse and trading jokes with Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora. Then Christie was introduced over the public address system.
Down came the boos.
The emcee mentioned Christie again, and the boos grew louder. As they subsided, scattered cheers for the governor rang out.
Christie shrugged it all off.
“Ah, who cares?” he said as he left the winner’s circle at Monmouth after American Pharoah won the 48th Haskell Invitational in commanding style. “That’s why I try to keep it low-key at sporting events. Nobody comes to a sporting event to see a politician.”
He added, “When you’re a politician, you expect that at sporting events.”
